Midnight cravings – Where to find them?
All of us have definitely experienced times when we crave for great food during the wee hours of the night. This brings us to the next question, where to go to find delicious food in the wee hours of the night? You are sure to have taken a few munchies in the whole day, but what about after the activities or work die down at midnight? And so, this article will contain your handy list of places to eat and points you to the local delicacies of Singapore which is still open after midnight!
1. Geylang Road
From soya bean drinks to Hong Kong styled dim sum; frog leg porridge to exotic durians and stir-fried beef horfun, Geylang Road is the place to head to. Normally opened late into the night, there are also stalls opened 24 hours to be found along this stretch of bustling road.
2. Upper Thomson Road
Roti prata and minced meat noodles with mushrooms are opened 24 hours along this busy road uniquely lined by various private housings in Singapore. While you are there, do remember to indulge in an alcoholic mudpie if you are not too drunk from attending night parties.
3. Serangoon Gardens
Found here are various stalls and pubs to chill out. Besides that, you will be surprised to find a full-fledged hawker centre here, named “Chomp chomp” which literally means “eat eat”. When you are in the vicinity, do try the fried hokkien prawn mee, barbeque seafood topped with lots of sambal chilli, chicken wings with Singapore’s flavour, wanton noodles and even, a bowl of hot and steaming mutton soup!
4. Bugis
With food ranging from nasi lemak to vegetarian food, this is the place to go for vegans. Vegetarian food is served hot and prices are really affordable too. If you feel full and need a walk after a meal of good food, you can go to the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple. It is the most popular temple in Singapore. Now, this explains the vegetarian food around the area doesn’t it?
5. East Coast Park
There are various eating places opened here – McDonald’s, Hong Kong cafes, even ice cream. But we will introduce you to Carl’s Junior located at the Playground@Big Splash. It is the only Carl’s Junior that is opened 24 hours in Singapore, serving huge burgers, with chilli beef fries and free flow drinks! Salsa included.
6. Kovan
Home to good Bak Kut Teh or “pork bone tea” literally and punggol nasi lemak, this is another hot hangout for locals. Seafood lovers may want to try the fried oysters usually served with egg and also, char kway tiao served with lots of cockles. Carrot cake should not be missed too! While this place has a hong kong cafe opened till late, local delicacies still takes top spot.
7. Jalan Kayu Road
This place is famous for its roti prata and the various unique ways to devour them. Think prata with ice cream, with cheese and mushrooms, or try paper prata (thin and crispy prata topped with honey) and if you are more adventurous, prata bomb!
8. Balestier Road
This is where the better chicken rice stalls are housed at. Order half a chicken (steamed or roasted), with green vegetables and a plate of fried tofu and you are already giving your tummy a treat! Steamed chicken have really smooth skin while roasted chicken gives off a really fragrant aroma. Fried tofu is always served with mayonnaise and vegetables with oyster sauce. For a taste of Singapore’s famous hainanese chicken rice, come here!
9. Yishun
Chong pang nasi lemak – one of the hot favourites among locals is a must try! Spotting a queue around midnight, we can assure you that the wait is worth it. It is coconut rice at its best, together with side dishes aplenty! Finish off with a cool and invigorating bowl of ice kachang (red bean ice) as a dessert and you are good to go for another day of visiting!
10. Fast Food
If fast food is your idea of a satisfying supper, then look no further than McDonald’s in Singapore. McDonald’s offer 24 hour round-the-clock delivery, so just give them a call and they will appear right at your doorstep in no time. If you want to give your legs a little footwork, then walk down to your nearest McDonald’s outlet, we are guessing it is opened 24 hours too, because at least one is within every housing area. McDonald’s not to your taste buds? Then run down to Changi Airport terminal one or three and you will find Popeyes which is opened till 2am.
