Day Trips – Pulau Ubin
Pulau Ubin
To locals, the name Pulau Ubin is a name synonymous with outdoor activities in a very laid-back environment. Think cycling, trekking and hiking. You will be recommended by locals to pay the sunny island of Pulau Ubin a visit. It is after-all, the very last kampong (village) in Singapore.
History
As Pulau Ubin is our last village that still exists, a walk through it is just like walking down memory lane. It is a reflection of how Singapore was like back in the 1960s where life was simple and people were happy with just the basic necessities – simpler pleasures of life.
Swaying coconuts palms lined the rustic roads where inhabitants and visitors stroll or cycle through. Do not be alarmed if you missed the life back in the city as you will see only one taxi servicing the whole area and water is not so readily available. This is the life of Singaporeans back in the 60s so you will gain knowledge on what we do back then. While there, breathe in the fresh air, eat the good food and relax in the slow moving lifestyles.
Sights
Other than rubber plantations, secluded beaches and flourishing mangroves, there are a few sights you should not miss in Pulau Ubin.
Once there, you will be greeted by the Ubin Jetty and when you take a walk to Ubin Town, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the unique wayang stage.
North
If you are headed northwards, then you will want to visit the Chek Jawa Boardwalk. Along the way, one would be greeted by various farms, fruit and rubber plantations, kampongs, and sandy beaches.
East
If you are east bound then the sensory trail awaits you with its mangroves.
West
“Westies” would be seeing quarries and Bukit Puaka – the tallest point on Pulau Ubin at 74m.
Activities
The various activities to expect at Pulau Ubin are mostly outdoor-orientated, such as cycling, walking, camping and fishing. The various lagoons boast clean water which is enjoyed by sailing and canoeing enthusiasts.
Other activities include stargazing where one has a better chance of seeing the Milky Way with your naked eyes away from the brilliantly lit mainland, Singapore.
Getting there and back
To get to Pulau Ubin, take a bumboat departing from Changi Jetty (Changi Point Ferry Terminal) daily. Fares for the ride cost $2.50 for each person.

Ubin Lodge
Ideal for a family of 4, each chalet consists of 2 rooms with built-in wardrobe and basic kitchen facilities. There is even a mahjong table and a mini fridge for your convenience. You can choose between booking a pondok (without portable water) or a chalet and the price ranges from as low as $50 per day to $130 per day.
Camping
If you want to get closer to nature, then camping is for you. Pitch a tent at one of the beaches in Pulau Ubin and you might come across owls, bats, fireflies and even luminous mushrooms! And you will wake up in the mornings to the call of the village rooster and the rhythmic chirping of birds. Permits are not required but do stop by the Ubin National Parks Info Kiosk and register your particulars at the Pulau Ubin Police Post.
Tips
Remember to bring protective gear if you are going to cycle and be careful when it is raining as you are not familiar with the surroundings. Swim only in designated spots as water may be treacherous and life threatening. Do not drink water from the toilets and wells as it is not treated and therefore unsuitable. To be safe, bring a bottle of water. Valuables should be attended at all times and wear comfortable clothing and footwear as the temperature can get quite hot. Lastly, do bring insect repellant as we do not want you to go through the agony of a sandfly sting.
